Varsity vs Michigan City (67 - 54) Win The Vikings had a game on Tuesday that was rescheduled due to the poor weather in the past month. Valpo hosted the Michigan City Wolves in yet another DAC matchup and their last home game of the year. The Vikings jumped out to an early 10-2 lead in the first quarter and forced the Wolves into their first timeout of the contest. As the quarter continued, Michigan City kept chipping back and eventually gained momentum in the away gym. A three-pointer and layup in the late stages of the first by Michigan City capped off an 13-4 scoring run and a 15-14 lead going into the second. The Vikings were able to fight back a little bit in quarter number two, but Michigan City was active on defense and the glass. The Wolves were able to force turnovers and capitalize on the offensive glass while gaining multiple second-chance points. Valpo went into halftime with the lead, 26-23. The entire game, the Wolves were firing from three-point range, but in the second half, while trying to mount a comeback, they were not afraid to shoot. For the game, City shot 6-21 from beyond the arc. They shot eleven threes in the last two quarters while only making four of them. At the start of the fourth quarter, Michigan City hit a three-pointer and took their first lead of the half, 43-41. After the hot start by the Wolves, Valpo then went on a 9-0 run and held on to the lead for the rest of the game. With two minutes left, the Vikings got a crucial stop on defense, and that put an end to the Wolves’ night. The Vikings hit multiple free throws in the late stages of the game that put the game out of reach. Valpo won their last home game of the season, 67-54. Jack Smiley had 22 points, shooting 50% from the field. He also added four assists, five rebounds, and six steals. Caden Crowell helped out the team by scoring 16 points and shooting 80% from three. Alec Platipodis chipped in eight points; KJ Avery and Phillip Amones each added seven points in the win. The Vikings “Battle for Campbell Street” takes place on Friday night in Chesterton. -Michael Opperman, VHS Senior
